Amasra

While walking in Asmara’s market, in Turkey, suddenly a lady selling bracelets and necklaces started calling me and told me that my hair looks cool. She asked for a closer look. Without hesitation, I showed her my dreadlocks and explained how I made them. She offered me a bracelet and invited me for tea at her shop. Tea is an essential ingredient of Turkish hospitality, it’s the way they break the ice and start a conversation. Huria doesn’t speak English, so I relied on Google translate to facilitate communication. . Once she heard my story – that I’m traveling around Turkey, she invited me to stay at her place for the night. Her hospitality was such a kind gesture I will cherish. It’s just another level of selfless generosity.

I spent 2 nights at her place and the time went very quickly.

Huria is a lady years older than me – but age is just a number. She choose to live on her own. I was so impressed by her positive energy and free spirit, I can only hope to be like her when I reach her age a great human being with big heart. She spends her days at her jewelry shop – smiling, laughing, singing, dancing or joking with her customers. The whole town knows her and they all love her. I was so lucky to have the opportunity to stay with her.

On my last day there, she surprised me with a little farewell party – complete with a cake .I was speechless. It was a fun night, we played games, danced and listened to Turkish music. And we also watched my previous documentary. The entire place was smiling – like one big happy family . I surprised her by staying another night.

Thank you so much Huria for your warm hospitality and generosity and for opening your beautiful home and warm heart to me. Welcome to Turkey. I entered Asmara as a complete stranger, and left with friends for a lifetime.
